How It Works
The calculator converts each monthly expense to an annual figure by multiplying it by 12: food cost becomes foodMonthly × 12, grooming becomes groomingMonthly × 12, and insurance becomes insuranceMonthly × 12. The three already-annual figures — vet costs, toys and supplies, and boarding — are used directly. All six annual figures are summed to produce the total annual cost. Dividing that total by 12 gives a smooth average monthly cost, which is useful for monthly budgeting even though some costs like vet bills occur irregularly throughout the year. The 15-year lifetime cost simply multiplies the annual total by 15, reflecting the approximate median lifespan of many domestic dogs and cats. For shorter-lived pets or breed-specific lifespan data, you can scale the lifetime figure accordingly. All fields default to zero if left blank, allowing you to model only the categories that apply to your situation.
