How It Works

The US Army circumference method uses two regression equations from AR 600-9. For males: %BF = 86.010 × log₁₀(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log₁₀(height) + 36.76. For females: %BF = 163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hips − neck) − 97.684 × log₁₀(height) − 78.387. All measurements are in inches. Waist is measured at the navel for males and at the narrowest point for females. Neck is measured just below the larynx, perpendicular to the neck axis. Hips are measured at the widest point. The logarithmic structure reflects the relationship between circumference differences and subcutaneous fat deposits. Body fat limits by age and sex: Males — 20% (17–20), 22% (21–27), 24% (28–39), 26% (40+). Females — 30% (17–20), 32% (21–27), 34% (28–39), 36% (40+).

Examples

Male Soldier, Age 25
25-year-old male, 70 inches tall, 15-inch neck, 32-inch waist.
Result: Estimated body fat ≈ 16.8%. PASS — well under the 22% limit for males aged 21–27.
Female Soldier, Age 30
30-year-old female, 65 inches tall, 13-inch neck, 30-inch waist, 38-inch hips.
Result: Estimated body fat ≈ 27.5%. PASS — under the 34% limit for females aged 28–39.
Borderline Male, Age 40
40-year-old male, 68 inches tall, 15-inch neck, 40-inch waist.
Result: Estimated body fat ≈ 27.4%. FAIL — over the 26% limit for males aged 40+.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the Army circumference method?
The Army circumference method is a screening tool, not a precise measurement of actual body fat. Research comparing it to DEXA scans (the gold standard) finds errors of ±3–5 percentage points in either direction. It tends to overestimate body fat in very muscular individuals (large waist from muscle, not fat) and can underestimate in those with high visceral fat but smaller circumferences. The method is designed to be quick, consistent, and reproducible when performed by a trained grader following exact measurement protocols.
What are the exact measurement protocols?
Neck: measure just below the larynx, perpendicular to the long axis of the neck. Round up to the nearest 0.5 inch. Waist (males): measure at the navel level, parallel to the floor. Round up to the nearest 0.5 inch. Waist (females): measure at the narrowest point, parallel to the floor. Round down to the nearest 0.5 inch. Hips (females): measure at the largest horizontal circumference of the buttocks, parallel to the floor. Round down to the nearest 0.5 inch. Measurements must be taken with a non-elastic tape directly on the skin, with the subject standing relaxed and breathing normally.
What happens if a soldier fails the body fat test?
Soldiers who fail the Army body composition standard are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP), formerly called the Weight Control Program. They receive nutrition counseling and a 6-month period to reach the standard. Failure to meet the standard within this time can result in administrative separation from the Army. There is no waiver for body fat standards — however, soldiers who fail the tape test may request a DEXA scan measurement if they believe the circumference method is inaccurate for their body type.
How does this compare to other body fat methods?
DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) is the most accurate non-invasive method, with errors under 1–2%. Hydrostatic (underwater) weighing is similarly accurate. Air displacement plethysmography (Bod Pod) is also highly accurate. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA, used in consumer scales) is convenient but affected by hydration and food intake. Skinfold calipers, if performed by an expert, achieve accuracy similar to the Army tape method. The tape method's main advantage is that it requires no equipment beyond a tape measure.
