How It Works

The calculator reads today's date with JavaScript's new Date() and constructs a target set to December 21 of the current year — month index 11 in JavaScript's zero-indexed system. If today is already past December 21, the year is incremented so the countdown always points to the next occurrence. The difference between the target and now is measured in milliseconds, divided by 86,400,000, and rounded up with Math.ceil so that any partial remaining day counts as a full day.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does winter officially begin?
Winter begins on the winter solstice, which falls around December 20th, 21st, or 22nd each year in the Northern Hemisphere. This calculator uses December 21st as a consistent fixed approximation.
Is the winter solstice always December 21st?
Not always — it can fall on December 20th, 21st, or 22nd depending on the year and time zone. The exact moment varies because the calendar year does not perfectly match Earth's orbital period, but the 21st is the most common date.
Does this work for the Southern Hemisphere?
No. In the Southern Hemisphere, winter begins around June 21st — the Northern Hemisphere's summer solstice. This calculator is calibrated for Northern Hemisphere users only.
