How It Works
Dividend Yield (%) = (Annual Dividend per Share รท Current Stock Price) ร 100. The annual dividend is the total amount paid per share over the trailing 12 months (or the next 12 months for forward yield). Dividing by the price converts it to a fraction of the stock's cost, and multiplying by 100 expresses it as a percentage. For example, a $2 annual dividend on a $50 stock: ($2 รท $50) ร 100 = 4%. Note that yield changes whenever the price changes โ a falling stock price mechanically increases the yield even if the dividend is unchanged, which is why unusually high yields deserve closer scrutiny.
Examples
Mid-Yield Stock
$2 annual dividend, $50 stock price.
Result: Dividend yield: 4%.
High-Yield Stock
$5 annual dividend, $40 stock price.
Result: Dividend yield: 12.5%.
Low-Yield Growth Stock
$0.88 annual dividend, $220 stock price.
Result: Dividend yield: 0.4%.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good dividend yield?
Typically 2โ5% is considered solid. Above 6โ7% may signal risk; below 1% offers little income.
Is a higher yield always better?
Not necessarily. A very high yield can indicate a falling stock price or an unsustainable payout.
How do I find the annual dividend?
Check the company investor relations page or financial data sites. Multiply quarterly dividends by 4 for the annual figure.
