How It Works
The formula is °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. There are two steps. First, subtract 32 to remove the offset between the two scales — Fahrenheit sets 32 as the freezing point of water, while Celsius sets it at 0. This shift brings the two scales to the same reference point. Second, multiply by 5/9 (≈ 0.5556) to account for the different degree sizes: a Fahrenheit degree is only 5/9 the size of a Celsius degree, so the same temperature change that is 9 Fahrenheit degrees is only 5 Celsius degrees. The result is displayed to four decimal places.
Examples
Room Temperature
A comfortable room temperature of 72°F.
Result: 72°F equals approximately 22.2°C.
Freezing Point
Water freezes at 32°F.
Result: 32°F equals 0°C.
Fever
A mild fever of 101°F.
Result: 101°F equals approximately 38.33°C.
