How It Works

Decimal = Numerator ÷ Denominator — the fraction bar is simply a division symbol. For example, 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. The percentage is then Decimal × 100, giving 75%. To simplify the original fraction, the Euclidean algorithm finds the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator. Both are divided by the GCD to produce the irreducible form. For example, 8/32 has a GCD of 8, so the simplified fraction is 1/4. When the denominator simplifies to 1, the result is displayed as a whole number. Division by zero is rejected as mathematically undefined.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a fraction to a decimal manually?
Treat the fraction line as a division symbol. Divide the top number by the bottom number using long division or a calculator.
Why is the denominator not allowed to be zero?
In mathematics, you cannot divide a number into zero parts. It is an undefined operation that will result in an error.
What is an improper fraction?
An improper fraction is a fraction where the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator, meaning the overall value is 1 or greater.
Does the calculator handle negative fractions?
Yes, you can make either the numerator or the denominator negative to find the negative decimal equivalent.
