How It Works

There are exactly 60 minutes in one hour, so converting minutes to decimal hours requires dividing by 60. For example, 90 minutes ÷ 60 = 1.5 hours. To display the result in the familiar hours-and-minutes format, the calculator takes the integer part of the division as whole hours, then applies a modulo operation on the original minutes to extract the remaining minutes. So 90 minutes yields 1 whole hour with 30 minutes remaining, displayed as 1h 30m. The decimal output is precise to two places for readability in billing contexts, while the hours-and-minutes output is exact for whole-number minute inputs.

Examples

Yoga Class
A 75-minute yoga session converted for a fitness log.
Result: 75 minutes = 1.25 hours = 1h 15m
Half-Day Meeting
A 210-minute workshop block on a project schedule.
Result: 210 minutes = 3.50 hours = 3h 30m
Flight Duration
A 480-minute (8-hour) transcontinental flight.
Result: 480 minutes = 8.00 hours = 8h 0m

Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours is 60 minutes?
60 minutes equals exactly 1 hour. This is the base conversion factor — dividing any minute value by 60 gives the equivalent decimal hours.
Why do you show decimal hours alongside hours and minutes?
Decimal hours are required by timesheets, payroll software, and billing tools because they allow direct multiplication by an hourly rate. The hours-and-minutes display is included so you can verify the decimal result intuitively.
Does this calculator round the result?
The decimal hours output rounds to two decimal places for readability, which is standard for payroll purposes. The hours-and-minutes output is exact when the input is a whole number of minutes.
