How It Works

Ovulation occurs approximately 14 days before the next period (the luteal phase constant). Ovulation cycle day = cycle length − 14. Adding this to your LMP date gives the peak ovulation calendar date. The fertile window starts 5 days before ovulation (sperm can survive up to 5 days in fertile cervical mucus) and ends 1 day after ovulation (egg viability window). Next period date = LMP + cycle length. All dates are estimates based on a regular cycle; individual variation is normal. For precise ovulation detection, use LH ovulation predictor kit strips.

Examples

28-Day Cycle Starting April 1
LMP April 1, 2025 with a standard 28-day cycle.
Result: Fertile window: April 9–15. Peak ovulation: April 14. Next period: April 29.
32-Day Cycle Starting April 1
LMP April 1, 2025 with a longer 32-day cycle.
Result: Fertile window: April 13–19. Peak ovulation: April 18. Next period: May 3.
25-Day Cycle Starting April 10
LMP April 10, 2025 with a shorter 25-day cycle.
Result: Fertile window: April 15–21. Peak ovulation: April 20. Next period: May 5.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fertile window?
The fertile window is the span of days each menstrual cycle when unprotected sex can result in pregnancy. It covers the five days before ovulation — because sperm can survive in fertile cervical mucus for up to five days — plus ovulation day itself and one day after, because the egg is viable for 12–24 hours after release. The highest probability of conception occurs in the two days immediately before and on ovulation day.
How reliable is this calculator for conception planning?
This calculator is a useful starting estimate, but ovulation timing varies even in regular cycles. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that only about 30% of women have their fertile window fall entirely within days 10–17, and many ovulate earlier or later than expected. For conception planning, combine this estimate with LH surge ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) for same-day accuracy, and consider tracking basal body temperature or cervical mucus as additional confirmation.
Can I get pregnant outside the calculated fertile window?
It is very unlikely but not impossible. Unexpected early or late ovulation can shift the fertile window. Stress, illness, disrupted sleep, and hormonal fluctuations all influence ovulation timing. This calculator should not be used as a contraceptive method.
What if my cycles are irregular?
This calculator assumes a consistent cycle length. If your cycles vary significantly from month to month, the projected fertile window will be less accurate. Track your period start dates over 3–6 cycles and use the shortest cycle length for the earliest possible fertile window estimate. People with irregular cycles benefit most from direct ovulation detection with LH test strips rather than date-based prediction.
