How It Works

The calculator first converts the discount percentage to a decimal by dividing by 100. It then multiplies that decimal by the original price to calculate the exact monetary amount saved. Subtracting the savings amount from the original price gives the final discounted price. For example, a 25% discount on $80 works as: 25 รท 100 = 0.25, then 0.25 ร— $80 = $20 saved, and $80 โˆ’ $20 = $60 final price. Equivalently, you can multiply the original price by (1 โˆ’ discount/100) in one step: $80 ร— 0.75 = $60. Both the final price and total savings are displayed so you can immediately verify whether a deal is worthwhile. Note that if multiple sequential discounts apply, you cannot add the percentages together โ€” each discount must be applied to the previous reduced price in turn.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percent off manually?
Divide the percent by 100, multiply it by the original price, and subtract that amount from the original price.
Does this include sales tax?
No, this calculator only finds the discounted price. Sales tax is typically applied to the final sale price after discounts are deducted.
What if there's an 'extra 10% off' the sale price?
Calculate the first discount to get the new sale price. Then, run that new price through the calculator again using the extra discount percentage. You cannot simply add the two percentages together.
