How It Works

The calculator divides your percentage value by 100 to produce its decimal equivalent. Mathematically, this is the same as moving the decimal point two places to the left — 45% becomes 0.45, 8% becomes 0.08, and 150% becomes 1.50. The conversion works for any percentage, including values below 1% such as 0.5%, which becomes 0.005, and values well above 100% such as 250%, which becomes 2.50. Negative percentages are also supported — entering −15% returns −0.15, useful for expressing losses or reductions in formula-based calculations. The output is rounded to six decimal places to preserve precision for small or fractional percentages where rounding would otherwise introduce meaningful error.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you convert a percent to a decimal manually?
Divide the percentage by 100. Visually, you can just move the decimal point two places to the left.
Why do I need to convert percentages to decimals?
Most mathematical formulas and financial equations require decimals to multiply or divide properly. You cannot multiply directly by a raw percentage.
What is 100% as a decimal?
100% as a decimal is 1.0. This makes intuitive sense — 100% means the whole, and 1.0 in decimal form also represents the whole. Any percentage above 100% will produce a decimal greater than 1.
What is 0.5% as a decimal?
0.5% as a decimal is 0.005. You still move the decimal point two places to the left.
