How It Works

The sales tax rate percentage is converted to a decimal by dividing by 100. That decimal is then multiplied by the pre-tax price to calculate the exact tax amount: Tax = Price × (Rate ÷ 100). The total final price is the pre-tax price plus the tax amount: Total = Price + Tax. For example, a $100 item at 7.25% sales tax produces a $7.25 tax charge and a $107.25 total. All three values — original price, tax amount, and final total — are displayed so you can see exactly how the final price is composed. Sales tax rates vary widely: US state rates range from 0% (in states like Oregon and Delaware) to over 10% when state and local rates are combined. Always use the combined rate for your specific city or county for an accurate total.

Examples

Result: Shows a $102 tax charge for a total price of $1,302.00.
Restaurant Bill
A $45 meal subject to a 6% local tax.
Result: Shows $2.70 in tax, bringing the total to $47.70.
Vehicle Purchase
A $25,000 car with a 4.25% state sales tax.
Result: Calculates a tax of $1,062.50 for a total price of $26,062.50.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is sales tax calculated?
Multiply the price of the item by the tax rate percentage (converted to a decimal).
Do all states have sales tax?
No. In the US, states like Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon do not have a statewide sales tax.
Is sales tax applied before or after discounts?
Usually, sales tax is calculated on the price AFTER store discounts have been applied. However, manufacturer coupons are sometimes taxed on the original price.
How do I calculate price backwards from the total?
Divide the total price by 1 plus the tax rate decimal. E.g., for a $105 total with 5% tax: $105 / 1.05 = $100 original price.
