How It Works
The prefix 'kilo-' means one thousand in the SI unit system, so one kilowatt equals exactly 1,000 watts by definition. To convert watts to kilowatts, the calculator divides your watt value by 1,000. For example, a 2,500 W electric heater equals 2,500 รท 1,000 = 2.5 kW, and a 150 W light bulb equals 0.15 kW. This conversion is exact โ there is no rounding involved because both watts and kilowatts are SI base-derived units with a fixed factor-of-1,000 relationship. Knowing the kilowatt value is necessary for calculating energy consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh): multiply kilowatts by hours of operation to get kWh, which is the unit used on electricity bills. For instance, a 2.5 kW heater running for 4 hours uses 10 kWh of energy.
