How It Works
Total annual hours = hours per week × weeks worked per year. This is a straightforward multiplication — for example, 40 hours/week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours/year, which is the US standard for a full-time employee. Average monthly hours are found by dividing the annual total by 12, giving approximately 173.3 hours/month for a standard full-time worker. This figure is higher than 4 weeks × 40 hours = 160 because months average 4.33 weeks, not exactly 4. To account for unpaid leave, reduce the weeks worked accordingly: 40 hours/week × 48 weeks (4 unpaid weeks off) = 1,920 hours/year. Paid leave, paid holidays, and sick days with pay should be included in the weeks count because you are compensated for those hours even though you are not physically at work.
