Pace Per Mile Calculator

Calculate your pace per mile and per kilometre from a distance in miles and total time.

Enter your values and click Calculate

How It Works

The calculator converts your total time from minutes to seconds. It then divides total seconds by your distance in miles to produce the pace per mile in seconds-per-mile. For the companion kilometre pace, the mile distance is converted to kilometres using the internationally defined factor of 1.60934 km per mile, and the same total seconds are divided by that value. Both outputs are formatted as MM:SS per unit, matching the standard display in running apps, GPS watches, and official race results. Enter fractional minutes for precise times — 90.5 for one hour, thirty minutes, and thirty seconds. For full-hour increments, simply multiply: 2 hours is 120 minutes, 3 hours is 180 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I enter 1 hour 30 minutes?
Enter 90 in the time field. For 2 hours and 15 minutes, enter 135. For 1 hour, 5 minutes, and 30 seconds, enter 65.5. The calculator handles any positive decimal minute value.
What is the difference between this and the Pace Calculator?
The general Pace Calculator uses distance in kilometres as input. This calculator uses miles, making it more natural for runners in the US and UK who measure their routes in miles. The underlying maths produces the same two pace outputs for a given run.
What is a good pace per mile for a beginner?
Most beginners run comfortably between 11–14 min/mile. Intermediate recreational runners typically target 9–11 min/mile, while experienced runners aim for under 8 min/mile. These ranges shift depending on race distance and fitness level.
