How It Works

Bitcoin is divisible to eight decimal places, and one satoshi equals one hundred-millionth of a Bitcoin (0.00000001 BTC). To convert satoshis to BTC, the calculator divides the satoshi amount by 100,000,000 — the denomination factor for Bitcoin's smallest unit. The resulting BTC value is expressed to eight decimal places to preserve full precision, since small satoshi amounts produce very small BTC figures. That BTC value is then multiplied by the current Bitcoin price in USD to give the dollar equivalent, expressed to four decimal places for sub-cent accuracy. Because Bitcoin's market price changes continuously, always enter the current spot price for an accurate USD valuation. The calculator accepts any satoshi amount, including values representing full bitcoins (100,000,000 sats) or tiny Lightning Network micropayments.

Examples

100,000 Sats
Converting 100,000 satoshis at BTC = $65,000.
Result: 0.001 BTC = $65.
1 Million Sats
1,000,000 satoshis — one millionth of a Bitcoin.
Result: 0.01 BTC = $650.
Full Bitcoin in satoshis
100,000,000 satoshis equals 1 BTC.
Result: 1 BTC = $65,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many satoshis are in 1 Bitcoin?
Exactly 100,000,000 satoshis (10^8). Bitcoin was designed to be divisible to eight decimal places, making satoshis the smallest possible unit that can be recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain.
What is a satoshi worth?
The value of a satoshi depends entirely on Bitcoin's market price. At $65,000 per BTC, one satoshi equals $0.00065. As Bitcoin's price rises, each satoshi becomes proportionally more valuable — which is why satoshis are increasingly used as the practical unit for small Lightning Network payments.
What other sub-units does Bitcoin have?
Beyond satoshis, informal sub-units include bits (1 bit = 100 satoshis), millibitcoin or mBTC (1 mBTC = 100,000 satoshis), and microbitcoin or μBTC (1 μBTC = 100 satoshis). The Lightning Network also uses millisatoshis (one-thousandth of a satoshi) for routing fee calculations.
