How It Works
The calculator works in two directions depending on which pace unit you select. If you enter a pace in minutes per kilometer, it multiplies by 1.60934 (the number of kilometers per mile) to derive your pace per mile, which becomes your mile time. If you enter minutes per mile, it divides by 1.60934 to find your per-kilometer pace. From the per-kilometer pace, the 5K projection is calculated by multiplying by 5. Speed in km/h is found by dividing 3,600 seconds by your seconds-per-kilometer pace. Speed in mph is found by dividing 3,600 by your seconds-per-mile pace. All results display in minutes and seconds format.
Examples
5:30 min/km Intermediate Pace
A solid intermediate runner training at 5 minutes 30 seconds per kilometer.
Result: Mile time ~8:51. 5K ~27:30. Speed ~10.91 km/h.
9:00 min/mile Beginner Pace
A common beginner to intermediate pace entered as minutes per mile.
Result: Pace ~5:35/km. 5K ~27:57. Speed ~10.73 km/h.
4:00 min/km Fast Runner
A competitive club runner targeting a fast pace per kilometer.
Result: Mile time ~6:26. 5K ~20:00. Speed ~15 km/h.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good mile time?
For recreational runners, finishing a mile in under 10 minutes is solid, under 8 minutes is good, and under 7 minutes is competitive. Elite runners complete a mile in under 4 minutes. Untrained adults typically run between 10 and 12 minutes per mile.
Does this account for elevation or fatigue?
No. The calculator assumes a flat course at a perfectly consistent effort. Real-world mile times will vary based on terrain, weather, hills, and how your pace changes during a run.
Can I use this to predict race times?
Yes, with caution. The 5K projection assumes you can sustain your entered pace for the full distance. Most runners slow down over longer distances, so actual race times may be slightly slower than the calculator predicts.
